How can I tell if my child is ready for kindergarten?

Self-Help Skills

  • Learn student number & teacher name
  • Unpack backpack and put belongings in proper place
  • Use the bathroom independently
  • Open lunchbox and lunch containers
  • Practice healthy hygiene
  • Dress self (zippers, buttons, etc.)

Fine Motor Skills

  • Hold a pencil
  • Write first name
  • Use scissors to cut basic shapes
  • Trace lines and shapes
  • Color or draw simple shapes
  • Opening/closing glue

Social Skills

  • Follow 2-step directions
  • Practice self control- taking turns and keeping hands to self
  • Communicate feelings and express needs verbally
  • Take turns while playing games
  • Clean up toys and belongings
  • Complete short tasks without an adult’s help
  • Control emotions without tantrums

Academic Skills

  • Follow direction from adults
  • Sit quietly and listen to a story
  • Identify some letters of the alphabet and those in your name
  • Count to 10
  • Sing and say ABCs

Trade screen time for WE time!

  • Talk to your child about everything. Conversation is the beginning of learning to read.
  • Read, read, read! Read to and with your child every day.
  • Play games together - Charades, Go Fish, I Spy, board games, rhyming games
  • Eat dinner together DEVICE FREE. Talk about your day, best part, hardest part, etc.
  • Spend time together as a family - build something, do a craft, ride bikes, have a picnic.
  • Make time for writing, drawing, and creative play.
  • Keep a consistent routine. Healthy routines and home help establish healthy habits at school.
  • Go outside and play!
